Arizona Society of Homebrewers

Greetings all,

New transplant brewer from Maine, and new ASH member checking in with his first post.

I have a fermentation question for you all.

With living in a rental here in Mesa while I am searching for a house, I a finding that keeping temps in the 60-70 degree range a bit harder than when I was in Maine.

Right now I have my brews sitting in a "swamp cooler" sitting in the shower in the spare bathroom.

However, even that keeps the temps close to 72 degrees.    Other ideas that you all do for summer fermenting?

I realize that in a few months it will be a bit easier...

Love to hear what you all do to compensate for the heat.

Do you know how many cubic inches that fridge is?

Last fall I bought a small wine fridge at one of the home improvement stores for just over $100.  Fits a 6 1/2 gal carboy easily and holds temp between 40-75 with ease and doesn't take up a lot of space.

Hey there! I wanted to post pics of my setup, also!  I 'inherited' a small fridge (I imagine craigslist would be great for finding one of these in the Tempe area) and had to cut the shelving off the door so it would close when the carboy is in there. Also, had to build a stand to raise it above the lip that was in the back of the fridge. It's regulated via a temperature control (3rd pic) and surveillanced with a meat thermometer (not pictured). :)

Man... A blowoff tube would have really been a good idea... Whomp whomp :(

This post is worthless without pictures. Slacker.

Nice job Sara, way to go.

Hello Sarah, Would you be so kind as to share what model your mini fridge is. That way I can look up the dimensions and compare them to the mini fridges on craigslist in order to find a suitable one. Thank you very much in advance and may you have a great day.

Hey Saul -- I'm not actually sure. I know it's a GE but I will have to look for a model # when I get home.
Thanks :)

I just got a 4.9 cu ft fridge. And Ill be using that as a fermentation chamber. It can fit either a bucket or a 5 gallon carboy. I don't have a 6.5 gallon carboy so I cant say it will fit. Thanks for the info in this forum and the links to the ETC build.

If anyone wants a mini fridge to build out into a fermentation fridge, let me know. I want this thing out of my garage. Will trade for homebrew. None of that commercial stuff though. I built an ETC for my fermenting cooler, be glad to show you how. Total cost was less than $30
Thanks Andrew. I'm going to order an aquarium pump on ebay to try to do something similar to http://club.azhomebrewers.org/forum/topics/etc-self-build without the neon lights. I don't know much about electrical wiring but hopefully following these schematics it will end up well. If you wired it up any differently or if you have any tips please let me know.

Thanks a lot Andrew. i used the info and links of your ETC build to build mine. It is working great. I appreciate the help.
