Who here grows their own hops?
Any special precautions with the summer heat?
Ideas / techniques for a New England transplant? (Hops grew great in Maine..)

Got some left over from last year. Keep in mind that when you order them online, you won't receive them until April. This will be too late to get a good yield because summer will be almost upon us. Hopefully, this year, I can get mine started at the end of February. We did Columbus and Willamette last year, but the Willamette did not fare as well. The Columbus grew well in the heat, but towards the end, it started to get a little sun-burned. I hope to have trellis up on my arbor by this summer. I have some pics in my profile of the hops and garden if you are curious.

I have a couple I planted last year. They faired OK, but go no yield from them. A fuggles and Goldings is what I got. I'm hoping they will pop up towards the end of Feb, like what Matt E. said.
Permalink Reply by Randy Barlett on January 28, 2012 at 8:34am Are you guys planting your hops with full sun exposure? I want to plant some this year but was scared they'd get sun-burned, would it be better to plant them so they only get morning/afternoon sun?

I planted in full sun, and yes, they did get a little sunburned. However, I think that planting early is more important than partial shade. They like lots of sunlight, but you don't want to harvest in August.
