From the American Homebrewer's Association (AHA) Website:
The Club-Only Competition (COC) program offers AHA-Registered Homebrew Clubs an opportunity to compete with other AHA-registered homebrew clubs. Each competition concentrates attention on a specific style of beer or mead, giving your club the opportunity to educate club members in these styles by focusing on them at club meetings or tasting events.
...
All AHA-registered homebrew clubs are eligible to host and to compete in the COC. Each club may only send one entry per competition. Your club should determine the procedure for selecting your club’s entry. Selection procedures can vary widely–some clubs choose an entry during an informal tasting, while larger clubs often run a formal competition. The club then sends the chosen entry to the appropriate judging site (see Schedule).
If your club’s entry places in any of the six Club-Only Competitions that are held on an August to May cycle, your club earns points towards the AHA Homebrew Club of the Year award on a twelve-eight-four basis for first, second and third places respectively. Additional club points are earned on a six-four-two basis for first, second and third places respectively in the First and Final Rounds of the National Homebrew Competition.
Each Club-Only Competition covers one or more categories with one or more subcategories from the BJCP Style Guidelines. To ensure your club’s entry is appropriately evaluated, pay close attention to the categories and subcategories of the competition.
ASH is participating in this series of competitions again this year. The entries will be due at the general meetings according to the following schedule:
January - Bitters (Won by Ken Forrey with an ESB)
March - Bock (Won by Ken Saxe with a Helles Bock)
April - Wood Aged Beer (Won by Tom Tomczyk with a Wooden Pail Ale)
July - Mead (Won by Barry Tingleff with a Traditional Semi-Sweet Mead)
September - Specialty/Experimental/Historical (Won by Keevin Simpson with a Cream Ale with Herbs)
November - Hefeweizen (Won by Chris Sprague with a Hefeweizen)
Instructions for submitting entries:
All entries will be judged by an ASH committee of BJCP certified judges. Score sheets will be returned to all participants at the next general meeting. The highest scoring entry will be passed on to the AHA for judging.
Any questions should be emailed to Barry Weeg at competition at azhomebrewers dot org.

November's competition has been judged. Chris Sprague won with a hefeweizen. It has already been mailed off. Good luck Chris.

Sorry, looks like I forgot to post the winner of Septembers competition. It was Keevin Simpson. I will let him describe the beer:
"Beer brewed with summer solstice herbs and slightly hoppier than a traditional cream ale.Herb blend including calendula, chamomile, St. John's wort, elder flower, & eyebright."
I also forgot to bring the score sheets to the meeting last night, but I will have them at the holiday party.

Comment by Keevin Simpson on September 12, 2011 at 11:40am I assume that we can enter more than one beer into the competition?

The next event in this series is due at the September general meeting and covers everything in BJCP Category 23. Entries must specify the experimental nature of the beer (e.g. type of special ingredients used, process utilized or historical style being brewed), or why the beer doesn't fit an established style. Additionally, the entrant may specify an underlying beer style. For historical styles or unusual ingredients/techniques that may not be known to beer judges, the brewer should provide descriptions of the styles, ingredients and/or techniques used. This is a tricky category to enter and judge. It is vital you include this information since it is impossible to judge this style without it. Any entry that does not include the above will be disqualified.

The meads have been judged and out of 7 entries Barry Tingleff was the winner with his Traditional Semi-Sweet Mead. Congratulations Barry!
I will bring the scoresheets to the next general meeting. I also still have a bunch of scoresheets from previous Club Only and Homebrewer of the Year comps, so if you're missing a scoresheet from one of these events, search me out at the meeting, I probably have it.
Comment by Kevin Masaryk on June 22, 2011 at 10:45pm The CoC results for Wood-Aged are in from the AHA. I'd like to point something very important out for future competitors; Notice how each beer that won LISTED THE CATEGORY OF THE BASE STYLE. If you refuse to do this for categories such as this or Belgian Specialty, Fruit Beer, S/H/V, etc., you will never score well at a BJCP-sanctioned competition. Judges don't like to play "guess the base beer" for categories like this and tend to award points accordingly. You have been warned.
Don't short-change yourself after spending all that time crafting what could be a high-scoring beer.

Comment by Ken Saxe on May 11, 2011 at 1:19am The AHA thanks Desiree Knott and the Fellowship of Oklahome Ale Makers (FOAM) of Tulsa, OK for hosting the Bock Club-Only Competition held April 23, 2011. This competition covered category 5 of the 2008 BJCP style guidelines. This was the fifth of six competitions in the August to May 2010-2011 cycle, with points going toward the Homebrew Club of the Year trophy. Points are awarded on a twelve-eight-four basis for first, second, and third place in the Club-Only Competitions. First, second, and third places in both the First and Final Round of the AHA National Homebrew Competition earn points on a six-four-two basis.
