2012 ASH Homebrewer of the Year Schedule

The 2012 ASH Homebrewer of the Year competition has been combined this year with the 2012 AHA Club Only Competition!

Schedule

The AHA has seen fit this year to schedule six competitions. So ASH has added just two more to round out the HBOY competition. The entries are due at the general meetings according to the following schedule:

January - COC Dark Lagers (BJCP Category 4) - Won by Mik Heerbrandt

February - COC Stout (BJCP Category 13)

March - Nothing Due

April - COC Scottish & Irish (BJCP Category 9)

May - HBOY European Amber (BJCP Category 3)

June - HBOY Belgian Strong (BJCP Category 18)

July - COC Porter (BJCP Category 12)

August - COC Light Hybrid (BJCP Category 6)

September - Nothing due at the meeting, but the Oktoberfest Competition will be held at the end of the month

October - COC Old Ale (BJCP Category 19A)

November - Nothing Due

December - Nothing Due

Instructions for submitting entries
  1. For COC entries: Rubber-band a completed Bottle Identification Form (PDF file) to each of three (3) bottles (one for ASH to judge and two to be shipped to the AHA) that hold a minimum of 10 ounces in volume, and that will fit in a standard case box slot.  The measurements of a standard case box slot are 2.75 inches long x 2.75 inches wide x 9 inches high (7 cm x 7 cm x 22.9 cm).  Bottles may be of any color and must be free of ink, paint, or paper labeling other than competition entry labels.  Bottles not meeting these requirements will be disqualified.  Bottles with raised glass lettering are acceptable.

For HBOY entries: Rubber-band a completed Bottle Identification Form (PDF file) to one (1) bottle. Bottles may be of any color or size and must be free of ink, paint, or paper labeling other than competition entry labels. Basically any clean bottle will do, we don’t care.

  1. Using a permanent black marker, obliterate any and all words or pictures on the caps.
  2. Fill out an Entry/Recipe Form Entry/Recipe Form (PDF file) completely, (you must fill in the category and subcategory you are entering!).

All entries are judged by an ASH committee of BJCP certified judges. Score sheets are returned to all participants at the next general meeting. Please pick them up then. For COC entries, the highest scoring entry is passed on to the AHA for judging.

The Homebrewer of the Year Competition is a multi-part competition consisting 4 mini, single-style competitions held throughout the year and ASH's Oktoberfest competition in October. The idea is to encourage the members to hone their skills by brewing to style as well as give them an excuse to brew styles they otherwise might not.

A "gold," "silver," and "bronze" medal (no actual medals will be awarded for the 4 mini comps) is chosen from the entries for each mini-competition. 3, 2, and 1 points are awarded respectively. Similarly, 3, 2, and 1 points are awarded to every medal won at Oktoberfest. However, THESE POINTS ONLY QUALIFY IF THE BREWER HAS ENTERED AT LEAST 2 OF THE MINI-COMPETITIONS. The highest total at the end of the year wins the coveted "Homebrewer of the Year" award and is recognized and awarded prizes at the December Holiday Party.

The next round is due on Thursday, February 23rd. You can drop them off at the clubhouse during our rescheduled AZ Beer Week general meeting featuring Lauren Salizar. This month we are looking for stouts. That includes anything that would be entered in category 13. This is for Club Only again, so we are requiring 3 (THREE) BOTTLES complete with BOTTLE LABELS attached to each bottle with rubber bands and ENTRY FORMS. And remember, all Club Only entries also count toward HBOY. So make sure to turn them in so you can start collecting points.

Starting in April, we are registering all HBOY/Club Only rounds with the BJCP. This means any BJCP judge that helps us judge these entries will receive 1 judging point. So that’s a possible 6 judging points over the course of the rest of the year. The BJCP requires that we designate a set time and location for these events when we register with them, so we have decided to hold them the Saturday after each general meeting at the clubhouse. This month’s judging time has not been set yet, but the next one will be on Saturday, April 21 at the clubhouse. Please contact Matthew Elliot if you would like to judge any of these sessions.

When will the first round be due? A February date like last year will leave very little time for brewing and conditioning, unless we already know what the first style will be...
